Sensitive and accurate skin surface hydration meter
MoistureMeterSC
The MoistureMeterSC is a fully portable and wireless instrument for measuring skin surface hydration.

MoistureMeterSC – Sensitive and easy-to-use skin surface hydration meter
MoistureMeterSC is an easy-to-use, fully portable and wireless skin hydration measurement instrument. It enables fast and objective assessment of skin hydration in the stratum corneum. This skin moisture meter makes it simple to analyze skin hydration levels for cosmetic testing, dermatology, and skin research purposes. Whether used as a moisture checker for skin in the clinic or the lab, it delivers objective data in seconds.
Skin surface hydration depends on two variables: the amount of moisture held in the stratum corneum and the thickness of the stratum corneum’s dry layer. The MoistureMeterSC uses a precise (1.25 MHz) electromagnetic field to measure the skin’s dielectric constant. By accounting for both variables, it delivers more accurate and reproducible results than conventional skin moisture detector devices. Get quote on MoistureMeterSC.

FAQs
FAQs
MoistureMeterSC is a skin hydration tester that measures skin surface hydration accurately and quickly. It provides objective readings in seconds, making it an essential tool in dermatology, cosmetic testing, and clinical research.
Monitoring skin hydration with a reliable tester is crucial in dermatology and cosmetic science. It helps evaluate treatment outcomes, assess barrier function, and provide evidence of cosmetic product performance such as moisturizers, cleansers, or barrier-repair formulations.
The MoistureMeterSC provides the same type of surface skin hydration measurement as traditional skin hydration meters / corneometers (corneometry), while offering fast, wireless, and reproducible readings. It combines the proven principles of corneometry with modern sensor technology, making it a reliable, portable solution for dermatology and cosmetic research.
MoistureMeterSC is a surface hydration analyzer, focusing on skin moisture at the outermost level. The MoistureMeterD Compact is a universal instrument for assessessing tissue water and edema in both skin and upper subcutis, making it better suited for deeper tissue analysis and swelling studies compared to a surface hydration analyzer like MoistureMeterSC.
MoistureMeterSC measures surface hydration at the outermost layer of the skin, while the MoistureMeterEpiD is designed to measure deeper skin hydration at the epidermal level.
MoistureMeterSC is ideal for surface hydration measurements. For assessing tissue water content at multiple depths, Delfin offers the Multiprobe MoistureMeterD, which measures from 0.5 to 5.0 mm below the skin surface.
The MoistureMeterSC is designed to measure moisture specifically within the stratum corneum (the outermost skin layer) providing consistent results regardless of variations in its thickness.

Use cases of MoistureMeterSC in skin hydration research
MoistureMeterSC is a professional skin hydration meter designed for objective measurement of stratum corneum hydration. As part of Delfin’s skin measurement device family, it provides rapid, non-invasive measurements of skin hydration in the skin’s outermost layer. MoistureMeterSC uses a capacitive measurement principle that is largely independent of surface electrolytes and conductivity effects.
In dermatological research, MoistureMeterSC has been used to investigate skin dryness and changes in skin hydration associated with aging, environmental exposure, and different skin conditions. Published studies have used the device to characterize stratum corneum hydration in research subjects with conditions such as atopic dermatitis and eczema, as well as to compare hydration levels between different study populations.
In cosmetic and pharmaceutical research, MoistureMeterSC is used to quantify changes in stratum corneum hydration when studying moisturizers, skin care formulations, nutritional interventions, and other factors affecting skin hydration. The device is suitable for both short- and long-term studies, providing sensitive and repeatable hydration data for product development, efficacy studies, and cosmetic claim substantiation.
MoistureMeterSC has also been used in research investigating relationships between skin hydration and other characteristics of the skin, including smoothness, flexibility, barrier function, and visible skin appearance. This makes objective stratum corneum hydration measurement valuable when studying the effects of topical products, environmental factors, dietary interventions, and skin care routines.
With its portability, ease of use, and repeatable measurements, MoistureMeterSC provides researchers with a practical and reliable tool for skin hydration research, cosmetic science, pharmaceutical research, and product efficacy studies.
For transepidermal water loss (TEWL) studies, see VapoMeter® (VX).
How to choose the right skin hydration measuring instrument?
While MoistureMeterSC measures surface hydration at the outermost skin layer, Delfin offers other instruments for different hydration and barrier assessments:
MoistureMeterSC – Surface Hydration Measurement (< 30 μm)
MoistureMeterSC measures skin hydration in the outermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum. This device is ideal for claims validation, efficacy testing, product and formulation research, and assessment of irritant or allergic skin reactions where changes occur primarily at the skin surface.
MoistureMeterEpiD – Epidermal Hydration Measurement (0.5 mm)
MoistureMeterEpiD provides insight beyond skin surface hydration, measuring water content throughout the entire epidermis. Particularly suitable for skincare routine evaluation, transdermal drug penetration studies, product and formulation research, injectables research, claims validation, and assessment of irritant or allergic skin reactions.
MoistureMeterD Compact – Tissue Water Assessment (2.5 mm)
MoistureMeterD Compact measures tissue water content deeper in the skin. The device is ideal for monitoring blood circulation-related changes, assessing swelling and edema, wound healing, burns, and other conditions involving fluid accumulation within the tissue.
Multiprobe MoistureMeterD – Layer-Specific Tissue Water Analysis (0.5–5.0 mm)
Multiprobe MoistureMeterD enables tissue water assessment at multiple depths. This is ideal for matching specific research objectives:
- 0.5 mm: Product and formulation research, claims validation, transdermal drug penetration, injectables, skincare routines, irritant and allergic skin reactions
- 1.5 mm: Transdermal drug penetration, injectables, irritant and allergic skin reactions
- 2.5 mm: Blood circulation studies, swelling and edema assessment, wound healing, burns and thermal injuries
- > 5 mm: Subcutaneous tissue metabolism studies and cellulite treatment evaluation
With this device and it's multiple measurement depths, researchers can evaluate hydration and tissue water changes from the skin surface down to the subcutaneous tissue layer.
VapoMeter® VX – Closed-chamber transepidermal water loss (TEWL) measurements
VapoMeter® VX TEWL meter uses the closed-chamber method to measure transepidermal water loss. The device delivers fast and repeatable TEWL measurements to evaluate skin barrier performance, making it ideal for both laboratory and on-site testing.
